Biochar research in Finland
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The personal data that FBA has collected is made available to Board members (the names, addresses and e-mail addresses as well as the membership fee payment info) and the Board members are responsible keeping this information always password-protected. Every FBA member is entitled to require information stored about him/herself By FBA to be reported upon a written request to the Secretary. The membership database is updated by Secretary at least once a month and old information (e.g. former members' information) is deleted within six months after the membership has ended. If the members of the association have any questions about FBA collecting data, please do not hesitate to contact the board.
3rd Finnish Biochar Workshop and the Spring Meeting 2018 of the Finnish Biochar Association

On March 28, 2018, the 3rd Finnish Biochar Workshop was held in Eura. The event was organized by Finnish Biochar Association and hosted by Biolan Oy, in their innovative eco-building. The location and host were the perfect match for us as just few months ago, the Biolan’s biochar-containing Istutusmulta was selected as the Gardening Product of the Year 2018 of Finland!
As usual, we had participants representing the whole Finnish biochar sector: several Finnish companies present (but also from Estonia, Latvia and Russia), researchers and local municipalities. The two sessions provided overview of the state of art of biochar research (amazing 1000+ papers published in first three months of 2018!), also biochar availability and opportunities-challenges and pilot cases in Finland.

We then toured the Biolan plant and finally, held the spring meeting of the Finnish Biochar Association. We there discussed thoroughly the most efficient ways the FBA and especially its Policy WG can use for enhancing the sustainable biochar production and use in Finland in regards to legislation.

New Board of Finnish Biochar Association starts, all members welcome to join the working groups!

In the Autumn meeting of 2017, new board was elected for 2018. Adj. Prof. Priit Tammeorg continues as the President of the Finnish Biochar Association, Vice Presidents are Mrs. Hannamaija Fontell and
Mr. Jure Zrim. Our Treasurer, Mr. Stefano Caro, also continues to hold the post in 2018.
Our new Secretary as well as Information Officer is Dr. Annakaisa Elo, she will also be in charge of e-mail correspondence. Other Board Members are Dr. Marleena Hagner, Mrs. Mina Kiani, Dr. Ilpo Pölönen, Prof. Kari Tiilikkala and Adj. Prof. Kim Yrjälä. Vice members of the Board are Mr. Seppo Mannermaa, Mr. Jarkko Nummela and Mr. Subin Kalu.
We decided to start three new working groups that all members are invited to join:
2nd Finnish Biochar Workshop successfully held! 12 December 2017
The 2nd Finnish Biochar Workshop was successfully held in Tampere on 4 December 2017, we had participants representing the whole Finnish biochar sector: companies, researchers and local municipalities. The event was organized by Finnish Biochar Association and Forest Biochar research group of University of Helsinki and hosted by Carbofex Oy.
During two sessions and 10 presentations we got the overview of the current developments in the area of biochar sector in Finland. Some of the presentations are available on our site, see www.suomenbiohiili.info/fba-workshops.html.
After the presentations we visited the brand new biochar factory of Carbofex Oy and arranged the Autumn Meeting of the Finnish Biochar Association. During the meeting we decided to elect Prof. Stephen Joseph as the Honourable Member of the Finnish Biochar Association and elected also new Board for the FBA for 2018. Later, the newly elected board also held its first meeting and decided, among other things, to start the activity of three working groups in 2018: Information WG, Event WG and Policy WG.
We will be posting about the activity of the working groups soon and all FBA members interested can join these working groups.

Final publication of EU COST Action TD1107 ("Biochar") published!

Eventually the final publication of the EU COST Action "Biochar as option for sustainable resource management" (2012-2017) is published in the journal Journal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, please see the open access papers from the journal website.
The nine articles cover the main results of the COST Action, some arer highlighted here. The first one published, Tammeorg et al. 2017 explored the research priorities for the future biochar research. The highest future research priorities regarding biochar’s effects in soils were: functional redundancy within soil microbial communities, bioavailability of biochar’s contaminants to soil biota, soil organic matter stability, GHG emissions, soil formation, soil hydrology, nutrient cycling due to microbial priming as well as altered rhizosphere ecology, and soil pH buffering capacity.
The Kern et al. (2017) paper focused on the question to what extent peat may be replaced in growing media by biochar. First positive results from laboratory and greenhouse experiments have been reported with biochar content in growing media ranging up to 50%. Various companies have already started to use biochar as an additive in their growing media formulations. Biochar might play a more important role in replacing peat in growing media, when biochar is available, meets the quality requirements, and their use is economically feasible.
Frenkel et al. (2017), on the other hand, concluded that even low rates of biochar addition (less than 1%) can have positive effects on plant health. Kammann et al. (2017) reviewed the current state of knowledge on the potential of biochar to reduce N2O and CH4 emissions from agriculture. The found that the largest future research needs lay in conducting life-cycle GHG assessments when using biochar as an on-farm management tool for nutrient-rich biomass waste streams.
The representetativeness of European biochar research was analyzed by Verheijen et al. (2017) for field experiments and Sakrabani et al. (2017) for pot and lab experiments. They concluded that the potential of different biochars for remediation of contaminants need more research attention and that it is crucial to contextualize the effects of biochar on soil properties.
The Biochar COST Action was an efficient initiative to make the network of biochar researchers in Europe more coherent and we are sure several new projects and synergistic future steps will follow!
